Match Review, Tottenham vs Chelsea.

Saturday 28th September 2013

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea.

Goals: Sigurdsson 19′ (Spurs). John Terry 65′ (Chelsea), Torres sent off 81′ (Chelsea).

Good result for both teams I feel. Very high intensity game, end to end, lovely football from both teams at times. A point is a fair result. Our first half performance was dazzling, we worked the ball really well in midfield and defensively we were extremely solid. We got the goal at nineteen minutes with a beautifully worked Gylfi Sigurdsson goal, Christian Eriksen working some more magic and Soldado assisted, we were flying! The second half was totally different. We were pushed hard, Juan Mata came on and controlled the game, a bad decision not to start him from Jose Mourinho! We were fully on the back foot, but Jan Vertonghen and Michael Dawsom stood firm until a beautifully waited ball into the box from Mata got Terry in to score with his head. 1-1. Fernando Torres showed his dirty side when he clawed Jan Vertonghen in the face, but he didn’t receive his marching orders, until karma struck and Mike Dean sent him off after another challenge on Jan Vertonghen. We then pushed for the winner, and came close numerous times especially with Defoe and Sigurdsson, it wasn’t to be, but we take the point and go top of the league. Happy.

A lot of great performances from our players, my pick of the bunch was Mousa Dembele; controlled the game from start to finish, on the ball he pushed us forward and defensively he was rock solid making some key tackles and interceptions. Showed why he started ahead of an in-form Sandro. Super Jan Vertonghen, we call him that for a reason, a world class defender, he is so talented with his defensive jobs, his tackling is some of the best I’ve seen at White Hart Lane and again today it was top notch. In the air he dominated Torres as well, very very good. Hugo Lloris once again showed he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and in my opinion the best in the Premier League at the moment. Made some match saving saves and patrolled his area extremely well, so glad he’s ours. Andros Townsend in the first half showed why he was preferred to Lamela, improved his ability to spot a pass and all round very good, unfortunate he got the yellow that forced AVB to take him off. One player who stood out for the wrong reasons was Kyle Naughton. He was dreadful, he’s not up to scratch for a team fighting for Champions League or even the title. We need Rose back soon as possible, even Fryers is a better option. Overall I’m happy with the performances of the players in a difficult and fast paced game.

Good point that puts us top of the League by one point. Our next game is in the Europa League against Anzhi on Thursday 3rd October away from home. Our next Premier League fixture is against West Ham on Sunday 6th October at White Hart Lane. Lots of games to come, let’s get back to winning ways after a good point. COYS!!

My player ratings for the team that faced Chelsea at White Hart Lane:
Lloris – 9 – Stunning display making some crucial saves.
Walker – 7 – Sometimes a little bit loose on the ball, but very effective offensively.
Dawson – 7 – Solid at the back, and controlled the back four well as always.
Vertonghen – 9 – Tackling master class today, all round he was phenomenal.
Naughton – 4 – Didn’t offer anything offensively or defensively. Not up to scratch for Tottenham.
Paulinho – 8 – Great performance in midfield once again. Think he’s world class.
Dembele – 10 – Man of the Match. Wonderful footballer. Bossed the midfield again.
Townsend – 8 – Much better decision making, passed the ball when it should be and cut down on wayward shooting. Good performance!
Eriksen – 7 – Great work for the goal, but crowded out at times. Needs time to settle into the pace of the game.
Sigurdsson – 8 – Good finish, came close on a few occasions. Unlucky not to win us the game, worked hard too.
Soldado – 6 – Created the goal but wasn’t provided with enough chances. Otherwise, his link up play was good.

Chadli- 5 – A little bit of a weird decision to bring Nacer on I felt, wasn’t bad, but didn’t impact the game at all.
Holtby – 6 – A few sparks of quality. Not a lot of time to make an impact. Worked very hard though.
Defoe – 5 – One chance which you would have expected him to finish, but he didn’t unfortunately.

Match Review, Tottenham vs Norwich.

Tottenham 2-0 Norwich
Sigurdsson 29′
Sigurdsson 49′

Great performance and a great win. We get our season well and truly back on track after the Arsenal disappointment. We dominated from start to finish, controlling the midfield and being extremely solid at the back. Norwich weren’t bad, we were just very good. The power in midfield we have with Paulinho and Dembele was too much for the Norwich lads Leroy Fer and Bradley Johnson. We were a real threat going forward, with every attack and shot looking like a goal was going to come from it. Very good win and credit to Norwich for trying to make a game of it and attacking us! Was impressed with them, I’m sure they’ll do just fine this season.

20130914-184711.jpgThe whole team was simply sensational, they all pulled together and looked fully at home on the pitch. Yes, it will take time for the new boys to settle, but it looked as though the players had played together for months. Christian Eriksen made his debut and he was phenomenal. The playmaker we’ve missed so far this season is Christian Eriksen, the little flicks, decisive passes and general controlling of the final third was stunning, and he still wasn’t at his best. Really exciting to see him in action this season. Gylfi Sigurdsson shut the doubters, including myself, up today with his two very well taken goals. Very happy for him, hopefully he continues this form. Danny Rose, Paulinho and Mousa Dembele were others that put in a really good shift to help us to victory. Lets hope we can continue this form for a long time to come and go on a winning streak. Our next game is against Tromso in the Europa League at White Hart Lane on the 19th September kick off 8:05pm. Our next Premier League game is against Cardiff, away from home, on Sunday 22nd September, kick off at 4:00pm. COYS!!

My player ratings for the team that faced Norwich at White Hart Lane:
Lloris – 8 – Didn’t have much to do at all!
Walker – 7 – A few sloppy moments, but on the attack was very good.
Dawson – 7 – Solid when asked upon, which wasn’t very often.
Vertonghen – 8 – On the ball was superb, made some key passes, and solid at the back.
Rose – 9 – On the attack he was top class. Defensively he saved us a few times!
Paulinho – 9 – Controlled the midfield, skilful, and a brute.
Dembele – 8 – Back to his usual self, bossing the midfield with Paulinho today.
Townsend – 7 – A little too eager sometimes, but was a threat all day with his pace.
Eriksen – 9 – 3 key passes and an assist. Amazing debut, going to be brilliant for us.
Sigurdsson – 10 – Man of the match. Two goals, worked hard. All round superb he was superb.
Soldado – 7 – A couple of half chances. Not his best afternoon. Link up play was great though.

Holtby – 6 – Worked very hard when he came on, not enough time to make an impact though.
Sandro – 7 – All over the park when he came on, tackles, passing, the lot. Happy he’s back!
Lamela – 6 – Sparks of brilliance, not a lot of time at all. Looks brilliant though!

Match Review, Chelsea vs Tottenham

Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham
Oscar 10′. Adebayor 26′
Ramires 39′. Sigurdsson 80′

Well, not what we wanted, but still a really great effort. We needed three points, that much was clear, and we didn’t get it and that is extremely unfortunate. Champions League is still a possibility, but it looks a much harder goal to reach now. A draw sits us 1 point behind Arsenal having played the same amount if games, and it’s now out of our hands, if they win their remaining games, Champions League is theirs. I think Chelsea still have two tough games, but with their performance against us, they look ready to win those tough games. Hard to take not winning, but I’m proud of how we performed to get a point on the night.

Emmanuel Adebayor was superb, gave us options all night with his ability on the ball, and he had a brilliant game, he scored a wonderful goal and his assist to Sigurdsson for the second was a touch of a genius. Let’s just hope he can continue to produce this form for the last two games. Missing Dembélé was a massive blow, the way he plays would have opened this game up for the likes of Bale and Holtby, but without him, we couldn’t really find the space, and both Bale and Holtby were marked off the ball, both having next to no impact on the game. Another AVB substitute came on and made the difference, and this time it was Sigurdsson, he never stops working the lad, and in the end got us the goal that forced the point. It wasn’t the game we were all hoping for, but it was a really hard fought point, we can be proud. We can do it, believe. Our next game is against Stoke at the Britannia on Sunday. COYS!!

Lloris – 7
Walker – 7
Dawson – 5
Vertonghen – 6
Assou-Ekotto – 4
Lennon – 6
Huddlestone – 8
Parker – 5

Match Review, FC Basel vs Tottenham (2nd Leg)

FC Basel 2-2 Tottenham. After Extra Time.
Basel win 4-1 on Penalties.

Valiant performance, we put everything into the game and in the end, extremely unfortunate. Basel are an awesome team, and have loads of quality, and probably deserved to go through over the two legs, but it’s hard to take, I hate penalties. I’m proud, proud of the effort we put in, and in the end it just wasn’t enough. Dempsey put us ahead, but we fell 2-1 down and we needed to save the tie, and Dempsey scored his second to make it 2-2. At this point, we had the momentum, but a Vertonghen red card just made it too much of an uphill task. Unfortunate.

Everyone put in a performance, everyone showed passion, desire and quality, we were just unlucky. Lewis Holtby worked his heart out, put everything into this game, just hoping we could get through, the fact he broke down in tears after we lost on penalties tells you how much he cares, love him. Tom Carroll was top class when he came on, his passing was great, worked hard and made some great tackles, one with a bright future, could be world class. Michael Dawson was a warrior, put his heart and soul into the game, match saving interceptions and tackles. Captain fantastic. A majestic run in a great competition, we’ve done our club proud. Tottenham ’till I die. Our next game is in the Premier League against Manchester City. Big push for Champions League and top four. COYS!!

Match Preview, FC Basel vs Tottenham (2nd Leg)

First Leg: Tottenham 2-2 Basel

It wasn’t the best of results at the Lane in the first leg, but it’s still very doable, we can still get to the semi finals. Being in the quarter final, there is never going to be an easy game, so we need to put in a performance worthy of going through to the semi final of a major competition. The 2 away goals will make it very difficult for us, but we have the ability to score 2 or 3 goals in any game. Winning 1-0 would get us through, and this should give us confidence, it’s more than possible. Basel are a good side, they showed that in the first leg, but we weren’t at our best, and we still drew the game, so a better performance should bring us the result we need.

Emmanuel Adebayor played well against Everton, and we need him to play even better and get a couple of goals. The way he plays could decide whether we go through to the semis or go out. Gylfi Sigurdsson has played well, and got 6 goals recently, so we need him to be on form, and maybe he could grab a goal like in the first leg. Steven Caulker should start, I think it’s important we play him, not only for his defensive abilities, but because of his threat from set pieces, we need goals, from anywhere on the pitch. Tom Huddlestone should start in my opinion, he has the ability to run the midfield alongside Tom Carroll, he also has a rocket of a right foot, maybe he could shave his hair by tomorrow night! We need to get through, we can do it! The game is televised on ITV 1, with coverage starting at 7:45. COYS!!

My preferred team to face FC Basel at St Jakob-Park:
Walker – Caulker – Vertonghen – Assou-Ekotto
Holtby – Huddlestone – Carroll – Sigurdsson

Match Review, Tottenham vs Everton

Tottenham 2-2 Everton
Adebayor 1′. Jagielka 15′
Sigurdsson 87′. Mirallas 57′

Not the best of results, would have loved three points, but with all of our injuries, a point against a great team in Everton is a bonus. We went 1-0 up through a rare Adebayor goal, and we thought that it was going to be a good day, but we let it slip unfortunately and we had to claw it back, Sigurdsson scored late on to grab us a point. It was a decent performance, but we missed our best players, when Lennon, Bale and Defoe are all out, it isn’t the greatest of situations. Everton performed well, and probably deserved the point because of the way they fought back after an early set back.

Emmanuel Adebayor was awesome today, finally put in a performance worthy of wearing the Spurs shirt, great goal, and he held the ball up well, really good, lets hope he can continue this form. Kyle Walker had a good game, his best for a while, and this is because of his ability to get forward when Lennon doesn’t play. Gylfi Sigurdsson was great, his crossing wasn’t great but he was always working hard and tackling well, played really well. Tom Huddlestone made a cameo performance and really played well, his passing was sublime and he looked really good, hope he has more of a role to play for the rest of the season as Parker isn’t looking good. Our next game is against Basel away from home, time to save the tie! COYS!!

My player ratings for the team that faced Everton at White Hart Lane:
Lloris – 8
Walker – 8
Dawson – 7

Match Preview, Swansea vs Tottenham

After our disappointing loss against Fulham at the Lane, we have to pick ourselves up, and bounce back to form. We went a massive 12 games unbeaten, and this is our chance to start up another similar kind of run. Swansea are a good side, and this will be an extremely hard game to get three points from, but we have the quality to do it. The obvious threat of Swansea is Michu, he has been phenomenal this season, he’s a great goalscorer and definitely one of the surprise candidates for player of the season. Swansea’s way of playing is really nice to watch, they pass the ball around really nicely, but we have the capability to match this style of play.

Our reverse fixture with Swansea was really tight, but we came out on top thanks to Jan Vertonghen, I expect the same sort of game at the Liberty Stadium, and lets hope we can get all three points again. Gareth Bale has returned from international duty injury free, and he also got a goal to his name, so we hope he can come back full of confidence and continue his recent run of form. Gylfi Sigurdsson had a stunning international break, winning Iceland a game single handedly with two great goals, so his confidence will be high. Also, Gylfi will be returning to the Liberty after a very successful loan there last season. This game will be difficult, so we have to up our performances in previous weeks and get the result. The game is at 3:00pm on Saturday, it is not televised. COYS!!

My preferred team to face Swansea at the Liberty Stadium:
Walker – Dawson – Vertonghen – Assou-Ekotto
Lennon – Parker – Dembele – Sigurdsson

Match Preview, Liverpool vs Tottenham

This will be a very difficult game to win, let alone get a point from, Liverpool are a good side, with very good players, to get anything at Anfield will be a bonus. Liverpool, on their day are brilliant, but when they don’t have a good day, they are very easy to defeat. They are very inconsistent, hot and cold, and at the moment, we are red hot, hopefully we can keep our run going and perform to our maximum. Luis Suarez is Liverpool’s main threat, he’s the Premier League’s top goal scorer with 21, and so he’s a definite threat, if any Liverpool player is going to score, it will be him.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, he has finally settled, and he’s playing some great football, he got an assist and a goal against Inter Milan, and also a goal against West Ham recently, so he’s in great form. Gylfi was close to signing for Liverpool in the Summer, but he chose Tottenham instead, and now he is going to face the team he almost joined. Jermain Defoe got himself in some great positions on Thursday against Inter, but he couldn’t finish them, he’s only just back from injury, so the run out against Inter should fully prepare him for this battle with Liverpool, goals please Jermain! Gareth Bale, he’s in blistering form, and he will be eager to continue that form, and keep scoring, so I find it hard to believe that the Liverpool defence will be able to keep him under control, expect another good performance from him. A massive game, lets keep the run going! The game is televised, it will be on Sky Sports with coverage starting at 3:00pm on Sunday. COYS!!

My preferred team to face Liverpool at Anfield:
Walker – Dawson – Vertonghen – Assou-Ekotto
Holtby – Parker – Dembele – Sigurdsson

Match Review, Tottenham vs Inter Milan

Tottenham 3-0 Inter Milan
Bale 6′
Sigursson 18′
Vertonghen 52′

A brilliant team performnce, an extremely good result to take into the next leg, we can now be confident of getting into the quarter finals of the Europa League. We attacked well, and defended even better, Inter couldn’t get a hold on the game and it made it easy, in the end, to get a convincing victory. A lot of people thought it would be a very hard test, and Inter would be a big threat to our hopes of winning the Europa League, but we were just too powerful for them, and in very good form. The tie is not over yet, we still have to go to the San Siro and perform, but it has just got significantly easier, the pressure is off us, and on them. They don’t seem to have much of a threat going forward, and their defence is all over the place, looking back at it now, we were always going to get a result unless something extraordinary happened.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was awesome, he has finally settled into life at White Hart Lane and could be one of our most important players leading into the end of the season, it’s really good to see him having some joy in our starting 11. Jan Vertonghen had a great game in the heart of our defence, he was a leader on the pitch, and he lead by example. Jan’s tackling, interceptions and clearances have been superb all season, but in the last 5-6 games, they have been saving us points, a class act. Scott Parker has had his critics since coming back from injury, but he showed us what he was capable of, and put in a captain’s performance, he showed off some of the abilities we haven’t seen much of since he has been with us, he showed he is capable of driving runs and ensisive passes, hopefully he can continue with this until the end of the season because having Sandro out is a massive loss. Gareth Bale will make all of the headlines again, he didn’t play his best, and he still scored, that is the sign of a world class player, but to be honest, and probably harsh on him, he needs to up his performance for the coming games. Gareth is now out of the next leg with Inter because of a yellow he picked up for diving, a scandalous decision. Our next game is in the Premier League, away to Liverpool at Anfield, the game is televised, it will be shown on Sky Sports with coverage starting at 3:00pm. COYS!!

Match Review, West Ham vs Tottenham

West Ham 2-3 Tottenham

What a fantastic game, one of the games of the season, for sure. We started the game well, got the early goal and we looked set for a convincing win, but then a rash challenge from a rusty Scott Parker in the box set us back as Andy Carroll slotted the ball away to make it 1-1. We had a shaky 20 minutes and then Joe Cole put West Ham ahead, 2-1. We then started to attack and pressurise West Ham, until, finally, we got the equaliser from Gylfi Sigurdsson, his first in a Spurs shirt. What happened next was magic, Gareth Bale, an unbelievable strike on 90 minutes put us in the lead, and gave us the win. Absolutely brilliant.

Gareth Bale, I think I’ve run out of superlatives to describe this boy, simply world class. His two goals were brilliant, he has saved us on many occasions and I wouldn’t swap him for anyone in the world, he is the best player in the Premier League, no doubt. Michael Dawson put in a captains performance, he cleared danger, and commanded in the air, he did everything we needed him to do, so happy that he’s established himself with AVB. Hugo Lloris was phenomenal, some of his saves were of the highest quality, he is so calm under pressure and for the first time, I’m confident in a Spurs goalkeeper! So happy for Gylfi Sigurdsson, he has been so close on many occasions with some brilliant strikes, and to get his first goal for us is amazing, hopefully he continues to improve and score goals, if he does he can be brilliant for us. I don’t even want to talk about Adebayor, he is not fit to wear a Spurs shirt, hope Defoe is back for our next game against Arsenal. Our next game is against Arsenal in the North London Derby, it’s going to be a cracker! The game is televised, it’s on Sky Sports with coverage starting at 3:00pm. COYS!!
